SF says goodbye to the 'Stick.

Slideshow in story.

Amazingly some people loved the damned place. Go figure.

I attended many Giants games there and froze. And didn't get a Croix De Candlestick until years later when I bought one in a sportscard shop.

My friend Glenn and I didn't seem to attend the extra inning games you needed to get the pin. We went to a lot of games then because back then the Giants were terrible and a box seat was $ 7.00 and you could sit almost anywhere you wanted. Food, rent was incredibly cheap back then too. 1.99 for a steak dinner, studio apt for $100 a month. Bus was a quarter, I think.

But I did see Mays, Marichal, McCovey, Cepada and the great Roberto Clemente play there, so I am not complaining. Day games were fine. I once went on a day in July with Glenn ( my best friend ) when they had a promotion by the Marines to cut your hair in a military cut for a free ticket. I did so and went in without a hat. HUGE mistake. I got sunburned and it hurt for weeks. Giants lost the game that day too, I think.

Only went to 1 49'ers game.

Steelers vs. Niners. MNF. Cosell said he was warmer in Green Bay. Was all bundled up wearing my Steelers garb and had 2 thermos'es, one full of coffee with brandy, one with beef stew. Caught the flu out there too. Colder than some games I saw at Pitt. Wind chilled the bones.

Steelers beat Steve De Berg 24-7. It was sadly the night of the Milk-Moscone murders at SF City Hall. I had known George Moscone and had only seen Milk in passing. What bugged me about it was the rage seemed to be all about Milk with little for Moscone who was a good man and might have become a great Mayor. His death became almost forgotten until much later while years later controversy arose as an artist did an incredibly controversial bust of his head which used elements of the verdict and riot on the bust.

DeBerg sucked even more than Noory that year.

That night protests degenerated into rioting as gays tried literally to burn down SF City Hall. That night along Polk Street and elsewhere in the city, cops had to tell people to go home and stay in their homes and off the streets as they didn't know if the riots would spread through the whole city.

Its ironic to see this crowd yell " No more violence ! " while they themselves are engaging in violence.

Unfortunately, it led to the rise of Dianne Feinstein to national prominence.

Looking to control the internet, one video at a time.
In a nice way, of course.
