Montana fall storm event: Road conditions deteriorating in Great Falls area

There was up to a foot of snow on Highway 2 near Browning as of Saturday morning. NWS Great Falls advised avoiding travel in several areas of north central Montana Saturday as a winter weather storm hit the state.
The Rocky Mountain Front and high plains were on track to receive record amounts of snowfall for fall in north central Montana at the start of an early season winter weather event Saturday, according to the National Weather Service in Great Falls.
The weather service advised against traveling if possible Saturday in many portions of the region as snow began to fall in the early morning hours.
Up to a foot of snow was reported on the road on U.S. Highway 2 near Browning around 7:30 a.m., NWS Great Falls said in a Twitter post, sharing a photo from a Montana Disaster and Emergency Services field agent in the area.
Choteau advised residents to stay home and travel only in the case of emergency, according to Facebook posts from the City of Choteau and the Teton County Sheriff's Department, as downed trees and power lines were "creating a very dangerous situation."
The Storm Prediction Center in Oklahoma forecasted snowfall rates of an inch per hour through midday on Saturday for the Rocky Mountain Front and Interstate 15 north of Great Falls.
Areas in Glacier Park and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation could see similar snowfall rates, The Associated Press reported, and Marias Pass saw a foot of snow fall overnight Saturday.
A semi was also blocking lanes on I-15 near Brady Saturday morning as the snow continued to fall, according to the Montana Department of Transportation.
Malmstrom Air Force Base in Great Falls reported hazardous driving conditions on base around 10 a.m. "The base remains open during normal duty hour, but exercise caution when driving on base," Malmstrom posted on Facebook.
Severe driving conditions were reported by the Montana Department of Transportation on Rogers Pass on Montana Highway 200 on the east side of Lincoln, with a semi spinning out and blocking the road around around 8:30 a.m.
MacDonald Pass outside of Helena also had significant snow on the road Saturday morning.
Portions of Glacier County saw up to a foot of snow overnight, according to NWS Great Falls snotel readings, with Teton County measuring 10 inches at Dupuyer Creek and 7 inches at Badger Pass in Pondera County.
The Winter Storm Warning for the Great Falls area and region will remain in effect until 6 a.m. Monday, with a weekend snow accumulation of 7 to 15 inches in lower elevations in Cascade and Judith Basin counties.
For areas west of Great Falls, including Glacier, Toole, Liberty, Pondera, Teton, and northern portions of Lewis and Clark counties, 3-5 feet of snow was expected in the mountains with 15-36 inches in lower elevations.
NWS Great Falls advised that if you must travel to bring a winter emergency kit and a flashlight in case you are stranded.

Arriving storm knocks out power, closes roadway

MISSOULA, Mont. — Wind from a winter storm arrived Saturday morning, knocking out power across western Montana and closing one roadway.
The Montana Department of Transportation reported that Montana Highway 35 was closed at Woods Bay Hill, 7 miles south of Bigfork, because of a tree and power line across the roadway. The closure was expected to last until 10 a.m.
Authorities have asked that only emergency traffic take Montana Highway 35, as downed trees continue to fall in the area, creating hazardous conditions.
The Flathead Electric Cooperative reported more than 900 customers along the East Shore of Flathead Lake without power as of 9 a.m. There were approximately 200 more customers without power in the Swan Valley, and more than 300 around Little Bitteroot Lake.
The Lincoln Electric Cooperative also reported widespread power outages.
"Our crews are continuing to work outages in the East side of the valley from Burma Road to Graves Creek, " the Cooperative said on Facebook. "In some areas Burma Road especially we are having trouble even getting to the affected areas due to downed trees. The County Crews are out trying to clear the roads now. We have significant damage in the Burma Road area, those residents should prepare for an extended outage. If members need water or a place to hang out our office is open and our Board Room is available."
Northwestern Energy's outage map noted around 100 customers out of power near Choteau, with 9 other smaller active outages of between 1 and 50 customers in areas across the western half of the state.
The City of Choteau reported numerous downed power lines and tress, which are creating dangerous conditions. The Public Works Director has asked that people stay off roads in the area. The Teton County Sheriff's Office also issued an emergency travel only notice on social media.
