TRUMP CRITICIZES CALIFORNIA'S HIGHEST GAS PRICES.

Maybe he's not aware of Jerry Brown's AB 1 that raised gas taxes and car registration to " repair " roads and allow millenials to jog on all of the SF Bay Area bridges and creates more pay to drive diamond lanes when those lanes were paid for by gas taxes long ago and should be free.
And starting next year welfare for State worker bridge toll takers will be over as all motorists will have to use Fastrak to cross Bay Area bridges.
No cash.
The SF Bay Area Oakland to San Francisco bridge was supposed to be toll free in 1950 when the bonds to pay for it were paid off.
Like so many things in this state, the statement made by Governor Frank Mirriam when he opened the bridge was a lie.
I saw the newspaper headlines as it was in the window of a North Beach used bookstore for years.

" Governor says bridge will be free in 1950 ! "

When the Bay Bridge opened in 1936, the toll was 65 cents, collected in each direction by men in booths fronting each lane of traffic. Within months, the toll was lowered to 50 cents in order to compete with the ferry system, and finally to 25 cents since this was shown sufficient to pay off the original revenue bonds on schedule. In 1951 there were eighty collectors working various shifts.

Although the bonds which financed the bridge construction were paid off in 1955, tolls were continued to help pay for other area bridges.

Construction on the bridge started in July 1933 and was financed by $61.4 million in bonds issued by the Reconstruction Finance Corp. and $6 million in bonds backed by the state gas tax.

According to the U.S. Department of Transportation, the bridge cost $53.6 million to build, which was about $6 million under estimates. Other websites, however, put the cost at $77 million.

I have looked for years to see when the bonds were paid off & the bridge should have been free.
Well, there it is above.
